'Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.' - C.G. Jung
Mental Health Therapy or 'Psychotherapy' can be viewed as a journey of discovery. Usually we have tried various means to ‘change’ or ‘fix’ things about ourselves, but likely, have not found long-term lasting solutions, despite our earnest efforts. I wholeheartedly acknowledge the courage and risk it takes to reach out to a professional for help. I’m continually in awe of how people grow, heal, change, bare and transform their hurt and suffering. I consider it a privilege to work as a psychologist-psychotherapist and assist people on their journey of deepening their self-understanding.
I work from a ‘depth’ insight-oriented (psychoanalytic/psychodynamic-informed) perspective, where so-called symptoms can be viewed as a sign that something within us needs attending.
What science has come to inform us is that ‘symptoms of the psyche’ (emotional, behavioral, and psychological) can alter, often in long-term ways, when attended to in the context of a trusting and mutually respectful psychotherapeutic relationship with a trained, sensitive, and skilled psychotherapist.
As a psychologist-psychotherapist, the unique context of the therapeutic relationship, allows for me to attend to listening- for not only patterns of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and relationship- but also their meaning- which may not be conscious to the patient. While symptoms of states such as anxiety and depression may be of commonality to many individuals with whom I work, the meanings of these symptoms vary tremendously from person to person. Thus, my work is tailored to the needs of each unique individual. Over time, experiencing these meanings is, in part, what can contribute to living with more freedom.
Additionally, I am trained to critically think about and examine the developmental implications of your symptoms, and how this has affected your functioning. Within the context of therapy, I can assess this in a variety of dynamic ways, with the aim of ultimately being of service to your healing and growth.
To this end my work can in part entail, a ‘symptom-focused approach’, but moreover, my education, training, and experience has been such to look beyond the symptom. I am listening for what is contributing to the symptom. In time, and going with the patient’s own pace, understanding and experiencing the root cause (and in many cases multiple causes) of symptoms, an individual is psychologically ‘freed up’ to make more intentional choices that can ultimately lead to more vibrant living. In this way, depth psychotherapy works to affect intrapsychic psychological structural change, which also has been shown to produce positive neurological changes in brain/mind functioning in aiding the brain in 're-wiring' for long-lasting change, in part, because of the different choices we make.
In sum, we work together to understand your current areas of unease, and the patterns underlying their maintenance. In this reflective atmosphere, creating meaningful psychological change is achievable, and one's sense of self is strengthened, whereby creating new ways of being and relating are possible.
